How to Care for Your Silk - Les Coeurs Sauvages

How to Care for Your Silk

Let’s talk about silk — a fabric so beautiful, yet so delicate. At Les Coeurs Sauvages, we strive to supply you with timeless designs at a quality that will last a lifetime. However, we recognize that forever may not be as long as you hope for when silk rears its high maintenance head. We’ve all had that moment where you accidentally shrink or stain your favorite outfit, and let’s face it — it's absolutely devastating, so let us lay out the best way to care for all of your silk products at home to avoid those costly dry-cleaning fees and get the most bang for your buck.

Silk Care

First, always check the care label located inside the garment. Although this guide will provide general universal silk advice, it’s always best to see if there are any specific care instructions the designer has provided.

Take your time, hand washing is ideal.

  1. Fill a bucket or sink with cold water.

  2. Add a decent amount of silk, or delicate detergent in cool water.

  3. Soak your silk product for 5-10 minutes (no longer than 30 minutes).

  4. Rinse through with cold water until the detergent has completely disappeared.

  5. Press between a clean dry towel. Make sure to never twist the silk fabric.

  6. Hang dry or lay flat to dry. Avoid direct sunlight exposure.

  7. To bring your silk garment’s shine back, iron using low heat or steamed to keep your pieces wrinkle-free.

In a hurry? Machine-wash is possible.

  1. Before you toss your silk pieces into the washing machine, sort them with the same color of silk. We recommend washing one piece at a time, and avoid washing with heavy items like denim.

  2. Place the garment into a protective mesh bag/laundry bag to avoid silk fibers tearing.

  3. Add a decent amount of silk, or delicate detergent to the machine.

  4. Machine wash with cold water under 30 degrees and begin washing on a delicate cycle.

  5. Once the cycle is finished, press between a clean dry towel. Make sure to never twist the silk fabric and DO NOT TUMBLE DRY.

  6. Hang dry or lay flat to dry. Avoid direct sunlight exposure.

  7. To bring your silk garment’s shine back, iron using low heat or steamed to keep your pieces wrinkle-free.

Store your silk.

Always put your silk away clean – in a cool, dry place – to help protect it from greedy moths. For extra peace of mind, keep it folded in a breathable cotton bag or hang it in a clothing cover.
